Review of the

Delta Reserve Card by American Express

Delta Reserve Credit Card Click to Apply

The American Express Delta Reserve Card is for high spenders who dont mind an annual fee in order to earn a lot of miles very quickly with Delta Air Lines.

Cardholders earn the standard one (1) mile for every $1.00 of purchases, but earn two (2) miles when they spend at drug stores, grocery stores, home improvement and hardware stores, post offices, and gas stations. However, this card offers some unique bonuses that few other cards offer:

  • Earn 10,000 Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) after making atheir first purchase.
  • Earn 15,000 MQMs and 15,000 bonus miles (total of 30,000 miles) with a "Built In Miles Boost" for spending $30,000 in one year
  • Earn an additional 15,000 MQMs if the cardholder reaches $60,000 in annual spend

Thus for high spenders, not only can they earn large numbers of bonus miles, they can also earn precious MQMs that will allow the cardholder to achieve elite status very quickly. In fact, if the cardholder spends $60,000 in the first year, he or she will earn 45,000 MQMs and be able to achieve the Silver elite status with Delta Air Lines and almost achieve Gold status that would normally require 50,000 MQMs earned usually by flying 50,000 miles.

For cardholders that already have status, these MQMs can be transferred to friends and family members who have their own Delta Skymiles cards. As well, each year the cardholder will receive a free companion certificate for travel domestically in either coach or business/first class.

The card also provides the cardholder and two guests with complimentary access to the Delta Skyclub, which includes the Crown Room Club. The Crown Room Club provides comfort as passangers wait for their next flight, complete with putting greens, complementary beverages, and satellite television.

When cardholders go to redeem miles for travel all redemption fees are waived - a savings of up to $150, and there are no fees when you book on any partner of Delta Air Lines - which could save you another $25.

Cardholders have the ability to pay with miles - use mileage for part of the flight and put the rest on you credit card!

This card offers the usual selection of American Express Travel Benefits, including auto rental insurance, travel accident insurance. The card also offers concierge services and roadside assistance, and emergy services if the cardholder loses their card, all of which are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The concerige services help you make hard-to-get dinner reservations and find the perfect gifts.

The usual protection services come with the card as well, including extended warranties, purchase protection and return protection, and a fraud protection guarantee.

The basic annual fee is $450, but is reduced to $395 for those that hold other American Express cards. While this seems high, for the right Delta flier, this card can earn Delta awards and Delta Elite status in the fastest way possible.
