AMEX Platinum Card

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card and the American Express Platinum Card appear similar because their card designs differ onlhy in color, and they are offered by the same Issuer, but when you look at the details of each card, they are actually very different cards with different benefits and services offered.

The Gold card is offered at a much lower annual fee - it is only $125 which is just a fraction of the $450 annual fee currently being charged by the Platinum Card. To compensate, the Platinum Card offers much more in the way of benefits and bonuses. Here are some of the ways in which the Platinum Card differs from the Gold Card:

  • The Platinum Card offers 25,000 bonus points, while the Gold card only offers 10,000 bonus points. While the Gold card requires you to spend $500 in the first three months in order to receive those 10,000 points, the Platinum Card requires you to spend at least $1,000 in the first three months.
  • The Platinum Card offers access to the Membership Rewards First program, while the Gold Card just offers the standard membership rewards program. The "First" program provides access to additonal partners and point redemption opportunities, as well as the ability to borrow points to be earned from future spending - the Gold Card does not offer any of these opportunities.
  • The Platinum Card offers access to the Platinum Travel Service, and the Global Assist Hotline, whereas the Gold card does not.
  • The Platinum Card provides access to airport lounges, whereas the Gold Card does not.
  • The Platinum Card provides Gold Elite access to the Starwood Preferred Guest Program, making you eligible for upgrades and addtional point bonuses, whereas the Gold Card provides no such access.
  • Both cards offer pre-set spending limits, but Platinum Card holders are likely to be able to buy more expensive items with fewer problems because of the higher credit ratings and greater financial resources that Platinum Card holders tend to have over Gold Card holders.
